To be rich is not a goal? But to be wealthy? Well, how does it work then? Is it philosophy? Searching meaning of meaning? The boy's father didn't of course seem to be in a mood to philosophize. Can you explain ? The boy questioned tepidly. The father told him that being rich is a matter of looking into numbers or amount. The increase in the number or amount may give people personal satisfaction and bloat one's ego but Wealth is a greater concept.
Wealth is about the overall well being of a human being. Wealth created frees you from worrying about money while giving you economic solvency. It is also a mental affair. So in other words if you are wealthy you need not worry about earning money. The boy understood his father's advise. He found it interesting and decided to find out more about his father's concept.
What shares did you buy? Well I bought Tata Motors. I bought 300 shares @ Rs3.08 a piece.I also bought 600 shares of Britannia industries @ Rs 1.62. The father asked him if he bought anything else ? He said he is waiting to buy some more shares when he feels he can buy them cheap. And what is the rationale behind the shares you bought? The boy was reviving his confidence finding that he has been able to bring his father into a discussion he highly approved.
Father, I bought those shares because I felt I can make money with them. Just like you have a highly successful business I thought that I must have my share of business too. Whenever I go out on the streets and I look at the cars I try to figure out which company they belong to. On the streets of Kolkata (Calcutta) the majority of them belongs to Hindustan Motors or Tata or Maruti. Since Tata Motors is the cheapest of them I bought its shares. Besides I look at the shares as part of my business which is going to earn money for me.I also tried to figure out whether Tata motors vehicles are popular in Asansol, Burdwan, Bolpur, Siliguri ,Srirampur or other such towns. I have observed that Tat Motors vehicles can be found all across West Bengal. That is why I decided to invest in these shares as I believe they are going to increase their sales and also across India.
And what about Britannia? The boy was all too happy to answer. Look carefully father. Even before investing in the shares I bought, I thought I must look inside.Inside? Inside what? In the company? No father. I thought let me look inside my own Flat as to what things I actually consume. Let us for example take Britannia. You know about Britannia longer than I know. All of us consume its biscuits. They again have their products sold in all areas possible. They are found and sold in Railway stations , stationary shops, in towns and cities and even villages. The same rationale that drove me to buy shares of Tata motors also drove me to buy Britannia industries. May be it is common sense father. The boy explained with great vigour.
Yes, the father answered wryly. But you see,my,son, that common sense is not altogether common. It is a rare virtue. And when are you going to sell your shares ? Sell them? No, I don't want to sell my shares. Why should I sell my business when they are good businesses? Good for you then. But , I shall still like to hold on to my belief that education is must for success. Will you promise me something? The father asked. What is it? The boy asked sheepishly. Promise me ,that you must complete your education before you do anything else! Ok that is a promise and a commitment.
Years after , when the men looks back at the decisions he took he realizes that he was not wrong. And his father? He was right on a greater degree. The Tata motors shares he bought 20 yes back and held them diligently is quoting at Rs 398.05 a share as on 6/3/2016. And Britannia is quoting at a mammoth Rs 2817 a share. Rs 2000 invested in the years 1996-1997 now is worth Rs 19,29,000!!!
That is the power of equity or share market. had The boy invested 2000 rupees in money market, a fixed deposit or had purchased bonds the money would have been worth merely Rs 16000 not even enough to beat the inflation.
And guess what!!! The father who had shown his displeasure about his son's investment that day was investing money in the equity market years before his son started investing. And ? Till date he had not sold one single share of the businesses he bought! His father tested him Wanted to see his mettle!! He still has to prove it to his father. Patience, perseverance, ability to take calculated risks, all these were his father's gift to him. Some of the rarest virtues!! The boy fulfilled his promise made to his father. He teaches in a college. But he is also an avid investor.Good night!!!
